The cover of this ceramic jar is molded in the shape of
a mountain, and figures and animals are depicted in the relief around the jar's body. Hill jars are ceramic substitutes for costly bronzes intended for burial with the dead. The form of a hill jar derives from a covered bronze wine jar called a zun. Elaborate cloud spirals filled with mythological and real animals date back as early as the seventh century BCE, and they invoke a realm of the immortals.
