During the first years of World War I, Jawlensky concentrated mainly on the landscape Variations seen elsewhere in this exhibition, but beginning around 1917, he turned to a large series of Mystical Heads, followed by other series of Saviour’s Faces, Abstract Heads, and Meditations. (One of the Meditations is shown nearby.) These studies are reminiscent of the traditional Russian Orthodox icons of Jawlensky’s childhood, but just as his landscape paintings had been exercises in paring down form to abstract planes of color, so too his series of heads trace an attempt to reduce conventional portraiture to abstract line, form, and, especially, color. Referring to these paintings, Jawlensky wrote, “I had come to understand that great art can only be painted with religious feeling. And that, I could only bring to the human face.”
