ASIA CROSSROADS, 08/01

Polo was another foreign fashion that took Tang China by storm. Introduced to China in the 6th century from Iran through Central Asia and India, it was played by both men and women. The stick, which would have been held originally in the hand of the mounted POLO PLAYER shown here, was curved, with an end like a crescent moon. The rider’s skillful horsemanship and chance for a good whack are evident as he leans into the shot with his horse in full “flying gallop.”
