These impressive sculptures convey the energy and fierce individualism of a camel’s character in his proud bearing. The Bactrian camel could be considered the life blood of the vigorous commercial trade that took place over the desert Silk Roads of Central Asia, especially from the late seventh to mid-eighth century. The double humps of one protrude above the pack-saddle with its projecting boards, load of vegetables, game, and a fanciful pack ornamented with the face of a hairy Central Asian. The glazing is brilliant with splashes of amber on green, light amber, and cream.
