Horse and Rider (female equestrian)
China
Terracotta with green and amber glazes, late 7th century
Museum purchase, 1943.7

This female equestrian’s high-waisted dress has narrow stripes and long sleeves that hang well below her hands—a style usually seen in 7th century dancing costumes. The horse has a hogged mane and ornamented crupper straps, but the green and amber saddle blanket are the pivotal center of this complex sculpture.
